Iterative
Design: Building "Non-techie" Technology
Task
Operate a low-cost fish-finding device and interpret the displayed information.
User
Non-technophile fishermen who may or may not have previous experience
with fish-finders.
Technology
A Visor Palm OS PDA, modified to provide water resistance, flotation,
and portability.
Level
of Support
Get as close to out-of-the-box operation without supporting documentation
- plug and play.
Process
Paper prototype testing through 2 iterations, then development in Visual
Basic for 3 more test/redesign iterations. The entire process was completed
in 10 days.
Design
T he device shown upper right is the final iteration. It is based on a
Visor PDA with a "FishFinger" Springboard expansion card in place. The
Visor is enclosed in a "Sony Sports Walkman-esque" water resistant, floating
clam-shell cover.
