Scenario Building
The Art of the Long View

An exploration of scenario building as described in The Art of the Long View, by Peter Schwartz, as a way of extending contextual design.

Process
Understand the formal Scenario Planning technique as a compliment to Contextual Inquiry.
Explore the technique of scenario planning for the adoption of iGather by a particular community: examining possible alternative futures for the iGather device.
Use scenarios as a way to buffer the iGather concept, so that when the law of unintended consequences shifts reality away from expectations the result would not be "wrong" so much as "oh, that one."
Consider replacing "what is appropriate?" with "what is appropriate, to whom?"

Design
The final product consisted of two matrices that help articulate the possible futures of iGather. Seven scenarios were developed in total.

What is iGather?
A PalmOS based portable ICQ device. Imagine a Sunday afternoon, you want to see "Brazil" at the local art theater. You would like to see it with 5 other like-minded people - iGather would help make that happen.
